20,000 bricks, 45,500 kg of cement, 443 tonnes of sand and 246 iron sheets, among dozens of other materials have finally been put together in the form of a new medical facility at the Katito Health Centre. The project which started with fundraising activities in November 2010 was completed in May 2012 after construction started in December 2011.
Following on from Ed Rarity’s successful music concert last summer to raise funds for Footsteps, Kingsley House at KCS in Wimbledon launched a new fund raiser during the Spring to help the charity.
Rokeby School in London donated used sports jumpers and rugby tops to Footsteps and they have been adopted by Obingo Primary School as their own sports kit when they play other schools...and it’s not just the boys...
Between 14th and 18th March a team of Footsteps supporters visited our schools and the Medical Centre which Footsteps has built in the Nyakach district of Western Kenya. We were entertained on arrival at each of the schools by their pupils performing songs and dances and on at least one occasion certain of our party were encouraged to join in (see the video). We also organised an impromptu 'mini Rafiki' morning with the pupils at Rae where a range of activities, solar cooking, cricket, rugby, football, netball, etc were undertaken.
On 19th February, Niall Clifford ran the Brighton half marathon in 2 hours and 7 minutes. He has managed to raise over £1100 to date. But it doesn't stop there, he's already aiming to complete a full marathon later in the year. If you'd like to sponsor Niall go to his JustGiving page. Thanks and good luck in your next challenge Niall.
On the 3rd February, we enjoyed a quiz night at Rokeby school. Once again Andrea and her team provided a set of questions to get the grey matter engaged and a tight contest ensued that was only resolved in the last round. Congratulations to the winners. Thanks also to Rokeby School who provided the venue free of charge. A hugely enjoyable evening raised almost £6000 towards our building projects.
In January, 13-year old Molly Jackson from Lady Eleanor Hollis School, Hampton, raised £100 pounds by selling cakes at her Sunday school and donated the proceeds to Footsteps.
Well done Molly, that's the equivalent of 10 new desks in our schools in Kenya.
25th November saw the Jingle Mingle disco for 11-13 year olds at the Putney Leisure Centre. The event was oversubscibed by quite a margin with all 200 places sold out by the beginning of the week. A great time was had by all attendees and some £1300 pounds was raised. Thanks to Matthew Burditt for promoting the event and to all the helpers who ensured everyone stayed safe.
