In our Rafiki 2019 programme, we took the opportunity to visit the Katito sub-county hospital which we have supported over the years with a comprehensive care centre for HIV patients, a children's ward and a laboratory facility.
Over the years since we built the first building (2008) the whole facility has gone from strength to strength with more and more services being added. Now the hospital has asked us for help to buy the equipment they need to do blood transfusions.
Every year in Kenya hundreds of mothers die due to complications during child birth because the medical facilities where they deliver their children are unable to give blood transfusions. The impact on the family is devastating beyond words and it's such a simple thing to fix.
We want to raise £11,000 (around $14,000) and for this we can buy a full haemogram test machine, a blood bank fridge and a digital waterbath.
Not only will this equipment save the lives of mothers, it will allow the hospital to also provide vital transfusion services for other patients such as small children with complicated malaria cases and sufferers of sickle-cell disease.
We have made our first attempt at a crowdfunding effort through the site www.startsomegood.com.
