July 2011
In July 2011, during our annual Rafiki trip, we were able to open a new classroom at Magunga Secondary School. We had never thought about supporting a secondary school before because in some areas secondary education is supported by other sources. In Magunga this is not the case and nearly all the children from our sponsorship programme are going to this school.
When we looked at the conditions in the Secondary School next to Magunga Primary School which we re-built in 2004 we were shocked. Eighty or ninety students, all hefty teenagers, stuffed into a classroom designed for 40, and others learning under trees. With this many people in a room the desks literally come up to the blackboard and the poor teacher is pinned in with no way out! And don’t even mention the heat generated by so many bodies in a small space when it’s 35 degrees outside…
