When Suzanne and Tony visited Kenya in March 2013 they dropped in to Kobeto Primary School which is about to be the site of our latest building project once the dormitory is complete at Magunga Secondary School. We wanted to inform the Headmistress about when she could expect to have us on site. We were also interested to hear about progress at the school and the recent academic performance.
She told us a story of a boy, Brian, who had done extremely well to get 373 out of 500 in his end of Primary exams, coming second in his class, but due to administration problems his expected scholarship to a county school had been blocked. As his family have no means to further support his education he was stuck at home two weeks into the new school year.
It’s difficult enough for Kenya without their brightest children being unable to further their education for administrative reasons so we decided to step in and ensure that Brian goes to Magunga Secondary School and, who knows, onto higher education after that. We caught up with a very relieved Brian just before the end of our visit and his new Head Master has promised to make sure he catches up with the work he missed in the first 2 weeks of term.
