Four new classrooms at Rae and Kobeto

July 2014

Our school make-over programme continues steadily and January saw the completion and handing over of four new classrooms.

Rae Primary School now counts on eight pristine classrooms paid for by Footsteps supporters and Kobeto has two.  Fortunately the work doesn’t stop there either.  We have funds in place to build two more classrooms at Rae and to finish off the partially built structure of six classrooms at Kobeto.

Work is expected to start in the second quarter of 2014 and be ready by July when our Rafiki Programme takes place.

Rae Primary School phase 1

March 2013

Phase 1 of construction has been completed at Rae Primary School with 4 newly completed classrooms ready for use.

The foundations, walls and roofs were funded with money from local government and we have partnered with them to complete the buildings with floors, plastering, painting, etc, etc.

We were very happy to see them having their final touches applied as we left our field visit in March 2013.

Two more classrooms have been constructed to half way up the walls. Phase 2 will be to finish them off.

Two more classrooms for Obingo

January 2013

Obingo Primary received two more completed classrooms courtesy of Footsteps.  The school had managed to get hold of money to put a foundation, walls and a roof, but the classroom wasn't a good place for education with no floors, doors or windows.

Girls dormitory for Magunga Secondary School

July 2013

The secondary school is a mixed boys and girls facility and the boys and girls come from miles around.  Before exams the pressure is really on the students to do their best and the teachers often lay on after-school sessions for revision purposes.

Unfortunately, on the Equator it starts to get dark around 6.30pm all year round so any female student studying late at school can be vulnerable to attack.  There is a lot of lawlessness in the area and security is very poor at night.

New project - Kobeto Primary School

November 2013

Down a mud track not far from the centre of Katito or from Magunga Primary School you will stumble across a compound with a few mud and iron buildings and a few unfinished brick rooms that constitute Kobeto Primary School.  There is even one classroom under a tree!

Despite this the school has climbed up the school league tables in recent years from midway to the top third of schools in the district.

New Project - Rae Primary School

April 2013

Rae Primary School is situated along the main road between Kisumu and Magunga, near to the town of Katito. The school is in a desperate state of disrepair. However, we have already connected the school to water during the Rafiki 2011 visit and have raised sufficient funds to begin building the school from our dinners in Oxford in the summer of 2011 and at the Lighthouse in Wimbledon in November 2011. We have also applied for more funds through the EU Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF).

New Classroom at Magunga Secondary School

July 2011

In July 2011, during our annual Rafiki trip, we were able to open a new classroom at Magunga Secondary School. We had never thought about supporting a secondary school before because in some areas secondary education is supported by other sources. In Magunga this is not the case and nearly all the children from our sponsorship programme are going to this school.

4 classrooms at Obingo Primary School

March 2011

Our big project for 2011 was the building of 4 classrooms at Obingo Primary School. It is the most difficult school to reach in the district, with vehicles having to cross muddy rivers in the rainy season and risk becoming stuck. These days little motorbike taxis allow access within half an hour from the main road on a dry day – if you dare get on the back of one that is.

Rae Mixed Primary School

February 2009

In 2008, Footsteps gave a grant of almost £2500 to Rae Mixed Primary School.  This money allowed the school to apply for a £25,000 grant from the EU funded, Community Development Trust Fund.  With this money 3 new classrooms were built and 6 others were completed.

In 2009, Footsteps put in an extra £18000 to fund an administration facility and a nursery classroom.
